The angel Gabriel told Daniel, “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression…” (Daniel 9:24; NASB). The transgression has not been finished. Biblical scholars have determined that each of Daniel’s 70 weeks is made up of seven years or 7×70. In other words, 490 years were decreed against Israel for breaking the Old Mosaic Covenant with God, not just 70 years. 483 years were fulfilled right up to when Jesus was cut off not for Himself, but for all of mankind. After a gap of some 2,000 years, the last seven years will begin. This time is called the seventieth week of Daniel or the Tribulation Period. When this period starts, it will be the last seven years of Gentile reign. After the seventieth week of Daniel, the Lord Jesus Christ will reign on earth.
Even though the pretribbers agree with these statements, they believe we (the church) won’t be here during the Tribulation Period. They use human reasoning to come to this understanding, instead of the Scriptures. Hal Lindsey writes:
“Since the Tribulation is the final seven years of Daniel’s prophecy of 70 weeks of years, and since the first 69 weeks of years were under the conditions of the Mosaic Law economy, it stands to reason that the same conditions must return for the final week.” (Hal Lindsey, Vanished Into Thin Air The Hope of Every Believer, page 383.) The probem is: the New Covenant is eternal, it cannot stop for seven years. Israel broke the Old Covenant. It has been stopped, never to exist again (Heb. 8). Israel and the church will go through the Tribulation Period together. If you want more information, read Jacob’s Trouble, by Gene Stone at 1-866-909-2665.
